Sohei Nishino
西野 壮平
Born in 1982, Sohei Nishino produces works using his experiences and memory from walks during his travels. His approach involves physically walking through different cities and taking photographs of whatever captures his attention.
Using fragments of his memory from the trips, he creates a paradigm with all the pictures he clicked, recreating an entirely new map carefully put together piece by piece.
His works are shown in major Museums and Festivals around the world including "A Different Kind of Order" at the Triennale of the International Center of Photography in New York, solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 2016 he was awarded Newcomer of the Year award by the Photographic Society of Japan. He has also been selected for the Foam Talents Call 2013, Sagamihara Newcomer’s Honorable Mention 2016, Prix Pictet Space shortlist in 2017 and the MAST Foundation Photography Award 2018.
Selected exhibitions also include Daegu Photo Biennial 2010, Emerging Artists in Japan vol.10 by Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography 2012, Festival Images Vevey 2012 and group exhibition Of Walking 2013 at Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.
He has participated in the "Images" photography festival in Vevey, Switzerland as part of the residency program, and also done a residency program at Cassilhaus in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
He continues to produce works through his memory and lens, providing the viewer a journey as they navigate through the pieces.
