“Diorama Map” is a series of works created by walking through various cities from 2003 to the present and piecing together, one by one onto canvas in accordance with a map, all the fragments captured from various vantage points—such as bird’s-eye views, overhead perspectives, or street-level shots. By reconstructing memories, the series visualizes the unique character of cities and the glimpses of their “present” that they reveal.
While the work employs photographs depicting concrete objects and events—which are entirely distinct from the symbolic representations found on maps—it transforms these images back into geographical expressions to portray the city as shaped by the artist’s accumulated experiences and memories.
The resulting work is by no means a map intended to convey accurate information; rather, it is a record of how a single individual viewed and walked through that city. It serves as both an expression of a particular perception and a microcosm of the city’s energy.
By employing my own body, I attempt to perceive the city not as an entity composed of symbolic information or physical structures, but as an organic, vibrant living organism in which the experiences and actions of its inhabitants—as well as its history and memories—are layered upon one another.
Diorama Map
